Where to Go, What to Do for “Dog-Friendly Outings”: Jacksonville Woodlands Trail System

Pack a light backpack with some water and snacks, grab the leash and load up your pup. It is time for a day trip!

Truly enjoying Rogue Valley summer sights and sounds mean bringing along your beloved pet; the question is where should you go for an exciting new dog-friendly outing?

The Jacksonville Woodlands Trail System is one of two great trail systems in the Jacksonville watershed. The second one is called Forest Park. The Woodlands Trail System encompasses 16 miles of trails and is located in Jacksonville city limits, whereas the Forest Park Trail System has over 30 miles of trails and is located about a mile west of town.

Both systems are dog-friendly with quite a few options depending on how long you want to hike and your fitness level.

Our favorite way to access the Woodlands Trail System is via the trailhead right next to the Britt Festival grounds.

Simply park the car in the free public parking lot across California Street from Britt (near the library), and walk across the road using the crosswalk, and up the stairs to the Sarah Zigler Trail trailhead on your right;
(http://woodlands.tedwebdesign.com/media/pdf/58_Zigler_Trail.pdf) you will see signage pointing the way.

After studying the Jacksonville Woodland Association trail map, you may decide to try one of the other sections of the Woodlands Trail System, such as the Beekman Loop Trail.

You might take in some of historic Jacksonville’s best features while you’re there, such as strolling by the many growers and crafters’ stands at the Jacksonville Farmers Market. Hours are Sundays from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. The market is located at the corner of 5th and C in downtown Jacksonville; (http://jville.market/)
