“Unexpectedly Unforgettable:” Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden

Cowhorn Vineyard likes to take risks and do things differently.

Unlike other Rogue Valley wineries, they chose grapes that grow in France’s Rhine River wine region. In Oregon, there is a shorter growing season and a lower latitude than France but other growing conditions are similar, so the Syrah, Granache (for white wines) and Marsanne, and Rousanne grapes (for Red wines) have found a home in America atCowhorn.

This Applegate Valley Winery also has the unique distinction of being a certified Biodynamic Farm (https://www.biodynamics.com/what-is-biodynamics) and also a Biodynamic Winery. There are not many farms, let alone winemakers, that hold certifications for both. Dr. Rudolf Steiner was a philosopher and scientist who integrated the love and respect for nature with viable practices for farming. His lectures from 1924 were used as the basis for his ethical and sustainable farming practices.

In 2019, Cowhorn was honored as the Best Biodynamic Winery & Agribusiness by Luxlife Magazine (https://www.lux-review.com/lux_awards/food-drink-awards/).

When you lift up a glass to take a sip of Cowhorn’s 2018 Viognier, you are participating in the end result of a beautiful and dynamic process with many dedicated players who had the fortitude and patience to allow your experience to occur. Cowhorn’s 2017 Viognier received the Runner Up Double Gold Medal. The winery explains the significance of this recognition:

“What does the “Runner Up Double Gold Medal” mean? They liked it! There were only three USA wines that brought home the title Runner Up Double Gold Medal.

The ranking order they provide is as follows: Gold, Double Gold, Runner Up Double Gold and Trophy, Trophy being the highest accolade you can receive and only one wine per class gets a Trophy award.

Considering our class “Other White Varieties” consisted of a huge showing of varieties such as Viognier, Gewurztraminer, Gruner Veltliner, Muscat, Torrontes, Moscatel, Siegerrebe, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Verdelho and others, we are pretty proud of this recognition.”

The tasting room is first in the United States to meet the zero-energy, toxin-free Living Building Challenge (https://cowhornwine.com/about/living-building-challenge/).

However, if you are not a member, you will need to make a reservation to visit the lovely gardens and estate here:
