An Engine, Transmission and Options for Every Work Style
Redesigned a year ago, even more technology and features have been added to the new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado.
The basic work horse model starts at just north of $32,000, with the mid-range, well-equipped RST is around $41,500 and the super-luxurious High Country comes in at almost $57,000. The highlighted model is the popular Crew Cab Standard Box 4-wheel Drive LT Trail Boss, coming in at $53,000-$58,000, depending on options and extras.
Car and Driver praises the Silverado 1500 as “rugged, adaptable and trusty,” with clever storage cubbies spread throughout the long cabin, which has excellent rear legroom. Lots of in-bed tie-down points and a massive bed capacity plus stout towing capacities mean hauling extra stuff is a snap.
“On the road” Car and Driver writes, “the big truck drives smaller than it is; handling is surprisingly agile, and the suspension delivers a smooth ride. There’s a great choice of engines for any job, including a V-6, two V-8s, a turbo-charged four cylinder and a diesel inline-6.”
The 2022 Silverado also has an impressive choice of transmissions. The standard 4.3-liter V-6 and the 5.3-liter V-8 with AFM still pair with a six-speed automatic, while the 5.3 and the four-cylinder equipped with the new DFM technology use an eight-speed auto. The 6.2-liter and 3.0-liter turbo-diesel each come with a 10-speed automatic that GM shares with Ford. A single-speed transfer case is the new standard for all-wheel-drive models, though the truck’s available Z71 Off-Road package—standard on Trail Boss models—adds back a low range. And, every all-wheel-drive Silverado now has push-button electronic controls to manage the system.
Edmunds says, “We’re big fans of the Advanced Trailering System’s many views, and our favorite is the Transparent Trailer view that electronically stitches together multiple images to create the illusion that you can see through your trailer as if it were made of glass.”
A big plus for contractors and others who rely in their trucks to work hard and be efficient, the payload and tow ratings are up by a few hundred pounds for some models, and the Silverado’s new bed is constructed in three pieces, which allows the wheel wells to be stamped differently, increasing cargo volume to 63 cubic feet in short-bed models. Short-bed variants of the V-8 Silverado are also 450 pounds lighter than the last generation.
Edmunds awarded the 2021 Silverado “best in class bed width on standard and long bed, best-in-class bed length on standard and short bed and best-in-class standard cargo bed volume – up to 20% more volume than the competition.”
Silverado can be equipped in a multitude of ways, including a 8.0-inch infotainment display, in-dash navigation, a head-up display, ventilated front seats, and wireless smartphone charging. Available driver-assistance features include automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlamps.
This new Silverado has sleeker lines in the hood and around the wheel wells, and a multilevel headlight array that modernizes the look. Each of the eight trims has its own personality, with distinct grilles, front fascias and wheel designs.
