According to Car and Driver, “Even in a world where SUVs hadn’t overrun the Earth, there would still be the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was one of the first SUVs that didn’t punish its passengers, that was as at home bumping gently against a parking log as bouncing off a boulder in Moab.
With its classic SUV look and proportions and real off-road capability, there’s one for every budget. A broadly appealing SUV that can almost certainly be specified exactly to your tastes. Regardless of which version you choose, the Grand Cherokee is thoroughly competent—and thoroughly enjoyable.”
Prices start at a bit more than $35,500 for the Laredo and go up to around $55,000 for the Summit. According to Motor Trend, “Getting the top-of-the-line Grand Cherokee as an alternative to a luxury SUV with a premium badge means a nice interior with good amenities.
The Summit comes with wood on the dash, front, and rear door panels and steering wheel, increasing the refinement inside. The quilted leather on the seats and door panels also stand out, telling the occupants that they’re riding in the most luxurious Grand Cherokee.”
Rear passengers will enjoy lots of legs- and headroom, a panoramic sunroof and the option for two personalized entertainment screens on the back of the front headrests. A Blu-ray video player can be shared by both screens, and each screen also has the option of playing its own content through an HDMI port.
The Grand Cherokee’s base engine is a V-6, which pulls strongly and transmits very little vibration into the cabin, and is the one Car and Driver recommends: “It’s well-matched to the Grand Cherokee’s heft, and it does an admirable job of motivating it around town and merging into traffic.
No matter the configuration, the Grand Cherokee will tow 6200 pounds for V-6 models, and 7200 pounds with the V-8. The V-6 delivers 25 mpg in real-world testing. It’s a luxury SUV. The steering is precise and has a nice heft to it; the Jeep tracks straight, which makes for laid-back highway cruising.”
The Grand Cherokee also comes with a long list of driver-assistance features. The optional Jeep Active Safety package includes adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and parallel- and perpendicular parking assist.
Edmunds says, “If you’re searching for a sturdy and off-road-capable five-passenger SUV, the seasoned Grand Cherokee is one of our top recommendations — a plush interior with plentiful luxury and technology, enough off-road ability to conquer practically any trail and impressive tow ratings for the class.”
