THE LION KING PASSES THE $1 BILLION MARK _ The Lion King has, as expected, earned more than $1 billion following its release in July. Disney’s live-action remake got off to a huge start, hauling $191.7 million in its opening weekend and has now passed the $1 billion mark on a worldwide scale. The new movie took very little time to get to the mark — just over two weeks — especially when compared to Disney’s other remake, Aladdin, which took two months.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN’S SON IS NOW A JERSEY CITY FIREFIGHTER _ The son of Jersey rock legend Bruce Springsteen is taking a different career path. Sam Springsteen is now a Jersey City firefighter. Sam, who’s 25, is the youngest of Bruce and Patty Scialfa’s three children, none of whom have followed their dad into show business.
JOSH LUCAS CALLS ON REESE WITHERSPOON TO MAKE SWEET HOME ALABAMA 2 _ Josh Lucas is more than willing to revisit Sweet Home Alabama — and he’s putting the pressure on leading lady Reese Witherspoon. The actor, who costarred with Witherspoon in the hit 2002 romantic comedy, is ready to take on a sequel and find out what childhood soulmates Melanie and Jake are up to. Lucas told ET, “I’m up for it. I know Reese’s said she is as well. The director is absolutely up for it. … So look, I throw it out to you, Reese. I think the person who’s the one to put it together is Reese, so I’m hoping. Who knows? She’s got a lot of irons in the fire to say the least. Hopefully this is one of them.”
LINCOLN LAWYER ADAPTATION COMING TO CBS _ CBS has given a series commitment to a Lincoln Lawyer adaptation from David E. Kelley. Based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling series of novels, The Lincoln Lawyer centers on Mickey Haller, who is described as “an iconoclastic idealist, who runs his law practice out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car as he takes on cases big and small across the expansive city of Los Angeles.”
… Matthew McConaughey previously starred in a 2011 film adaptation of the Lincoln Lawyer book series.
WOODSTOCK 50 IS OFFICIALLY CANCELED _ Woodstock 50 is officially canceled. Despite multiple attempts to save the beleaguered event in recent months, organizers announced on Wednesday (July 31) that they were officially pulling the plug.
… Woodstock 50 was originally scheduled for August 16-18 in Watkins Glen, New York.
TV ACADEMY WON’T GIVE OUT A GOVERNORS AWARD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 25 YEARS _ The Television Academy won’t be handing out a Governors Award at this year’s Emmy ceremony, the first time it has opted not to hand out the honor in 25 years. The Board of Governors of the TV Academy has the option to hand out one Governors Award annually, or skip it. But since establishing the award in 1978 (the first one went to CBS founder William S. Paley), the board has given it out every year except two: 1993 and 1994.
… Last year, the Governors Award went to the Star Trek franchise, while in 2017 it was given to the Independent Television Service (ITVS), which funds and distributes documentaries for public broadcasters.
NETFLIX IS TESTING YOUR ‘PHYSICAL ACTIVITY’ _ For Android users, there will be no more chilling while you have the Netflix app playing, at least if you don’t want the streaming company to think that you’re a lazy couch potato. New reports suggest that Netflix has started tracking “physical activity” for certain Android users, to test how it “can improve video playback quality when a member is on the go.” Last week a security researcher on Twitter noticed that the Netflix Android app had added a menu asking for permission for physical activity access.
… The feature is reportedly only being tested on some accounts, with no current plans to roll it out on a wider basis.
YOUTUBE ‘KING OF RANDOM’ STAR DIES IN PARAGLIDING ACCIDENT _ Grant Thompson, the star and creator of popular YouTube channel King of Random, died on Monday in a paragliding accident in Utah. He was 42. Thompson’s body was recovered early Tuesday morning in St. George, Utah after his family filed a missing person’s report on Monday night when he didn’t return from his trip. Officials were able to quickly locate his body thanks to a GPS locator in his possession.
… Thompson had amassed over 11 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, posting experimental videos and clips about various projects. His most popular video, How to Make LEGO Gummy Candy, had over 26 million views.

MIKE TYSON IN FAMILY MATTERS DEEPFAKE _ Mike Tyson has been deepfaked into the opening credits of the classic TV sitcom Family Matters. Deepfakes combine and superimpose existing images and videos onto source images or videos using AI. In the case of the Family Matters opening credits, Mike Tyson was deepfaked as every character. • VIDEO
