What’s Happening…

KATY PERRY, LIONEL RICHIE, LUKE BRYAN RETURNING TO AMERICAN IDOL _ Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie have signed on to judge the next season of American Idol. It returns in 2020. The show ran for 15 seasons on Fox, then moved last year to ABC where it has aired two seasons.

A FIGHT SCENE THAT WILL PLEASE STAR WARS AND MARVEL FANS _ The YouTube channel ImmersionFX has combined the worlds of Thor and Star Wars. A new video alters the Thor: Ragnarok scene in which the hero battles Hulk. In the altered scene the two superheroes are battling with Star Wars lightsabers. • VIDEO

THE MATRIX IS RETURNING TO THEATERS _ The Matrix is headed back to theaters for one week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sci-fi classic. Specifically, it’ll be screened in the 135 Dolby Cinema AMC theaters around the country, from August 30 to September 5.

… Technically, AMC is a few months late here — the film was released on March 31, 1999 — but given that the film came out so long ago, there are likely plenty of fans who never had the chance to see it properly in theaters.

ABC SETS HOLIDAY-THEMED ‘LIVE IN FRONT OF A STUDIO AUDIENCE’ _ ABC has lined up its next two “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” specials with Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel. The next installment of the special will air this winter and carry a holiday theme. It will be followed by another special in the spring. No casting information has been released, nor details about which of Lear’s episodes would be featured.

… The first Live in Front of a Studio Audience special aired back in May and re-created episodes of All in the Family and The Jeffersons with a cast led by Woody Harrelson, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes.

THE PROPOSAL CANCELLED AT ABC _ ABC is saying no to The Proposal: The reality romance competition from The Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss has been cancelled after just one season.

TOP HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: THE ADDAMS FAMILY _ An estimated 12,000 high schools have a drama program in the U.S., and that means a lot of school plays. So, what’s playing? The top high school musical in 2019 was The Addams Family, followed by Mamma Mia!, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Mary Poppins. As for plays, Almost, Maine came out on top, followed by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter and the Starcatcher, Our Town and Alice in Wonderland.

MATT DAMON GETS FOUR NEW TATTOOS _ Matt Damon is showing off his love for his children with some new ink. The actor got the names of his four daughters — Alexia, Isabella, Gia and Stella — tattooed in fine line cursive on his right upper arm from Los Angeles-based tattoo artist Daniel Stone — a favorite of stars like Sophie Turner, Joe Jonas, Lady Gaga, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.

… The new artwork is right next to his “Lucy” tattoo which is dedicated to his wife, Luciana Barroso.

EL PASO NATIVE KHALID PLANS BENEFIT CONCERT _ El Paso native Khalid is planning a concert in his hometown to benefit the victims of Saturday’s fatal mass shooting and to help remedy his “heavy” mind and heart. The 21-year-old Grammy-nominated R&B star tweeted Monday: “Hearing/seeing an act of terrorism happen so close to home, my family, and my friends has been unbelievable and shocking.” The Texas concert is expected to take place later this month, with proceeds going to families affected by the shooting.

ANDY SERKIS IS DIRECTING VENOM 2 _ After his involvement was first rumored several weeks ago, Sony has finally confirmed it. Variety brings word that Andy Serkis has officially signed on to direct Venom 2.

… This news comes almost a week after Tom Hardy seemed to prematurely announce Serkis’ hiring. Last Wednesday, Hardy posted a screenshot of Serkis on his official Instagram account. He quickly deleted the post, but not before a number of social media users were able to take screencaps of his mistake.
