Bugs-R-Us Educational Services presents five family-friendly programs this Winter
John Jackson of Bugs-R-Us Educational Services will present a variety of science and nature-themed programs at Jackson County Libraries this winter. These programs are free and for all ages.
Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils
Shady Cove Library: Friday, December 27, 2019, from 1:00–2:00 p.m.
Learn about different types of rocks and minerals, including how fossils form. Learn about Oregon’s geology, and discover how we use minerals in everyday life, such as in oils, plastics, salt, and more.
Siskiyou Mountain Wildlife
Eagle Point Library: Saturday, December 28 from 1:00–2:00 p.m.
Rogue River Library: Saturday, January 11 from 12 noon–1:00 p.m.
Jacksonville Library: Saturday, January 25 from 12 noon–1:00 p.m.
Take a walk on the “wild side” and learn about the wildlife, geology, and rare plants of the Siskiyou Mountains. The Siskiyou Mountains have a wide variety of animals not commonly seen anywhere else. During this program, John Jackson will discuss fourteen different animals and share furs, pelts, and feathers from a wolverine, lynx, spotted skunk, bald eagle, fisher, and marten.
Mammals of Southern Oregon
Medford Library: Wednesday, January 15 from 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Explore real animal skulls, furs, scat, and tracks. This program includes a hands-on activity making your own animal tracks. No live animals.
Birds and Bird Nests
Talent Library: Thursday, January 30 from 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Learn about local backyard birds, including how they live, their importance to the world, and their life spans. The program includes examples of nests, feathers, birdcalls, and local bird trivia.
Natural History of the Oregon Trail
Gold Hill Library: Wednesday, February 5 from 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Learn about the animals, plants, and geology of the Oregon and Applegate Trails, including game animals like bison, elk, deer, and quail, as well as the predators: coyotes. Touch animal hides, horns, and feathers from all of the mammals and birds discussed.
