Kirk Douglas died this week. He was 103.

KIRK DOUGLAS DIES AT 103 

One of the best from the golden age of Hollywood, Kirk Douglas, died earlier this week.  He was 103. The real Spartacus,…and acting legend, had been in good health since suffering a stroke in 1996, is survived by his wife of 65 years Anne Buydens, and his three sons: Michael, Joel, and Eric. Douglas had 92 acting credits, including some 75 movies.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE ADDS JOHN MULANEY, DANIEL CRAIG AS SEASON 45 HOSTS 

Comedian John Mulaney will host the February 29 episode of Saturday Night Live, marking his third visit to Studio 8H. Formerly a writer for SNL, Mulaney previously hosted the show in April 2018 and March 2019. He’ll be joined in February by musical guest David Byrne, who also recently appeared on Mulaney’s Netflix special John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch.

… Actor Daniel Craig will then host the March 7 installment to promote the upcoming James Bond film, No Time to Die (in theaters April 10). This will be Craig’s second time hosting, while musical guest The Weeknd will be back for his third appearance.

… As previously reported, RuPaul will preside over SNL’s February 8 episode with performances from Justin Bieber.

KEITH RICHARDS QUITS SMOKING 

Keith Richards finally has quit smoking. The Rolling Stones guitarist, whose body was already a marvel of human endurance, has finally lit up for the last time. Richards, age 76, says he’s been cigarette-free since October.

SHAKIRA AND JENNIFER LOPEZ WEREN’T PAID FOR THEIR HALFTIME SHOW 
Shakira and Jennifer Lopez shook their moneymakers at the Super Bowl 2020 halftime show, but they didn’t actually make any money. Instead, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be paid “union scale,” which, according to Forbes, is “a fraction of the six- and seven-figure sums” they rake in on a regular show.

… This isn’t an anomaly — every Super Bowl halftime performer from Beyoncé to Bruno Mars has essentially worked for free. According to Forbes, the organization foots the approximately $10 million in production costs, essentially providing performers a massive, free platform to advertise their work.

… Spotify reports that Jennifer’s online streams skyrocketed by 335 percent with Shakira’s jumping 230 percent after their halftime performance.

SHANNEN DOHERTY REVEALS SHE HAS STAGE 4 CANCER 
Shannen Doherty is facing a major health battle. Appearing on ABC News Tuesday, the 48-year-old actress said she now has stage 4 breast cancer. The Beverly Hills 90210 star announced in 2017 that she was in remission for breast cancer that had been initially diagnosed in 2015.

GROUNDHOG DAY COMMERCIAL WAS SHOT THE WEEKEND BEFORE IT AIRED 
In an interview with the director of the wildly popular Jeep-Groundhog Day Super Bowl commercial it was revealed that the ad was filmed the weekend before the Big Game. The commercial was edited into its final form the Monday before the Super Bowl, then sent off to Jeep for approval.

DISNEY+ ALREADY HAS 26.5M SUBSCRIBERS 
Disney announced Tuesday that its streaming service Disney+ has 26.5 million paying subscribers. Disney+ launched on November 12 and is not yet available globally. The day after the launch, the company said the service already had more than 10 million subscribers.

… In comparison, Netflix said last month that it has 167 million paid subscribers worldwide.

PATRICK DEMPSEY WILL STAR IN CBS POLITICAL DRAMA 
Former Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Depsey has signed on to star in Ways & Means, a drama pilot for CBS. The potential series “revolves around a powerful congressional leader who has lost faith in politics who finds himself working secretly with an idealistic young congresswoman from the opposing party to subvert the hopelessly gridlocked system he helped create.”

DISNEY APOLOGIZES TO SCHOOL AFTER CHARGING THEM TO SCREEN LION KING 

You know those warnings that show up at the start of a DVD or Blu-ray which warns you that the movie is for home use only? Most people probably pay them little to no attention, but it turns out Disney takes them very, very seriously. As you may have heard, Emerson Elementary School in Berkley, California screened 2019’s The Lion King recently during a “parent’s night out” fundraising event, and shockingly, Disney charged them for doing so. Yes, several months after the event took place, the school got an email from Movie Licensing USA, informing them that they’d illegally screened the film and now had to pay $250.

… Facing a whirlwind of backlash online after word of this got out, Disney’s CEO (Bob Iger) issued an apology to the school Thursday, revealing that he’ll personally be donating to their fundraiser initiative.

GAL GADOT MAY BE RETURNING TO FAST AND FURIOUS FRANCHISE

By this point, the Fast & Furious series is pretty familiar with resurrection: a number of ‘dead’ characters have come back in later films. Now there’s word that Universal wants to bring back another character from beyond the grave: Gal Gadot’s Gisele, who, if you’ll recall, met her end back in Fast & Furious 6.

… A source says the studio is hoping to have Gadot star not only in Fast & Furious 10 but also have her in the all-female spinoff movie that’s being planned.

DISNEY MAKES BRUNO MARS DEAL 

After months of discussion, Disney has set a deal with Bruno Mars. The studio will develop a music-themed theatrical narrative feature that Mars will star in and produce. The plot is being kept under wraps. This comes in the wake of a a deal with Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Hamilton musical film, for which the studio paid $75 million for worldwide rights.

HEINZ SALUTES ITS FAMOUS KETCHUP’S FILM CAMEOS IN OSCARS CAMPAIGN 

Kraft Heinz Canada has launched a fun campaign around the Oscars that has included trying to get an official IMDb page up for Heinz Ketchup, recognizing all the cameos the condiment has enjoyed in movies over the years. The IMDB page was taken down by the site — which Heinz is taking as an Adam Sandler-level snub. Now, it’s asking fans to find movies featuring Heinz Ketchup and share them on their social feeds, with the promise of free ketchup for those who take part. • VIDEO

STREAMING SUBSCRIPTIONS AND MOVIE TICKET SALES RISE TOGETHER 

A study commissioned by the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) found that subscribers to multiple streaming services were also more likely to buy more movie tickets.

… In addition, the survey found that 53 percent of all respondents were more likely to stream a movie if they knew that it had been released in theaters, compared to 6 percent who said they were less likely.

FOX PICKS UP MUSICAL GAME SHOW I CAN SEE YOUR VOICE WITH KEN JEONG 

Ken Jeong will host I Can See Your Voice for Fox, a music mystery game show. Like The Masked Singer, which also involves music and mystery/guessing, I Can See Your Voice is based on a South Korean format. The series will premiere later this year.

… Unlike The Masked Singer, I Can See Your Voice does not involve actual singing until the reveal. Each week, one contestant will have the chance to win a cash prize if they can tell the difference between the good and bad singers, without ever hearing them sing a note. Helping the contestant navigate through rounds of lip sync challenges, comedic hidden clues and true-or-false evidence will be a panel of celebrity comedians/experts and a musical superstar, an element that mirrors The Masked Singer.

In the end, the singer whom the contestant picks will reveal if they are good or bad in a duet performance with the musical superstar. If the chosen singer can hold a tune, they will receive a special reward, but if the singer is tone-deaf, they will receive a cash prize.

DEMI LOVATO IS GETTING HER OWN TALK SHOW ON QUIBI

Demi Lovato, who recently sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl and delivered a heartfelt performance of her new single Anyone the week before at the Grammys, is getting a 10-episode Quibi series called Pillow Talk With Demi Lovato. She will have unfiltered conversations with both celebrity and expert guests on topics including activism, body positivity, sex, relationships, social media and wellness.

… Quibi will launch on April 6. It’ll cost $4.99 per month for ad-supported streaming, and $7.99 for ad-free service. It’ll have 175 new shows in its first year.

NETFLIX WILL LET YOU STOP THOSE ANNOYING AUTO PREVIEWS 

Your long global streaming nightmare is finally over. At long last, Netflix is letting users turn off those annoying previews that automatically play whenever you fire up the app. Netflix said that although some people find the previews useful, it gets that many, many others can’t stand them. From the Manage Profiles settings on a browser, you can enable or get rid of “Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices.”

CBS NEWS RESPONDS TO GAYLE KING’S CRITICISM OF EDITED CLIP 

Gayle King said she was “embarrassed” and “mortified” over a clip from an interview she did with basketball star Lisa Leslie discussing the legacy of Kobe Bryant that King says was taken “out of context.” The clip focused heavily on the late Bryant’s rape trial from 2003, and King had asked Leslie if that news tarnished his legacy in her eyes. The moment sparked outrage from stars like Snoop Dogg and Vivica A. Fox, as well as many others on Twitter who said King was being opportunistic in the wake of Bryant’s death.

… On Thursday however, King said that the clip from the interview was shared by the network without her knowledge, and it failed to show the full scope of the interview King did with Leslie.

… King said that after the full interview aired on Wednesday, she spoke with Leslie, who said she was satisfied with the full interview. Leslie in the clip said it’s time for the media to move past discussing the court case, and King stressed in her Instagram post how powerful that moment was to her and said she insisted that moment be in the interview to provide a full sense of context.

APPLE TV+ ORDERS FIRST LADIES ANTHOLOGY SERIES STARRING VIOLA DAVIS AS MICHELLE OBAMA 
A new anthology series focusing on the personal and political lives of first ladies will focus on Michelle Obama, Eleanor Roosevelt and Betty Ford in its first season. Viola Davis will play Michelle Obama.

MACAULAY CULKIN MAY RETURN AS KEVIN IN HOME ALONE REBOOT 
You probably heard the news that a new Home Alone is on its way. Disney+ has wasted no time after nabbing the franchise from Fox in producing another movie about a kid hilariously injuring a couple of of idiotic criminals. Naturally, though, a generation of fans who grew up loving the original two films have criticized the studio for continuing the series without Macaulay Culkin. But it seems the actor may return after all.

… According to sources, Kevin McCallister will have a supporting role in the new Home Alone. The movie, which will apparently be a legacy sequel/reboot, will feature the adult Kevin as the owner of his own security firm.

CHRIS ROCK’S ‘SAW’ REBOOT OFFERS UP FIRST TWISTED TRAILER 
The first trailer for Chris Rock’s Saw reboot titled Spiral hit YouTube Wednesday — and it looks twisted. Starring Rock (also the executive producer) and Samuel L. Jackson, Spiral is a reboot of the now iconic 2004 horror film Saw, which spawned a large, gory franchise. Spiral is in theaters May 15. • VIDEO

ELIJAH WOOD WANTS ROBERT ENGLUND FOR NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET REBOOT 
The potential of a second reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street inches ever closer to becoming a reality, and Elijah Wood has stated his desire to bring back Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. The franchise has had no new installments since the reboot almost a decade ago. However, now that the rights for the series have returned to Wes Craven’s estate, anyone could throw their hat in the ring, with it being recently announced that Wood and his producing partner Daniel Noah are interested in pursuing a film.

… Nothing official has been announced, or been suggested that it will even go ahead, but Wood is adamant about the importance of Englund being a part of any potential new movie: “You have to bring Robert Englund back for one more film. I think, especially if you’re going to open up a new franchise and take it in different directions, you have to establish it with him and then you can move on.”

JOHN KRASINSKI AND EMILY BLUNT REPORTEDLY TOP CHOICES FOR FANTASTIC FOUR REBOOT 

The Fantastic Four are back where they belong. Fox had three attempts to get the characters right but never really managed it, so fans are excited to see what Marvel Studios does with the First Family now that they have the rights again. After waiting so long for the team to be treated properly, folks have some strong opinions about what Marvel should do with them and at the top of the list is getting John Kransinski and Emily Blunt to play Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman.

… According to a source, the real-life couple are the studio’s top picks to play Reed Richards and Sue Storm in the MCU. It’s said that the Four will make their debut in the franchise in Ant-Man 3, likely arriving in 2022.

MANDALORIAN SEASON 2 COMING TO DISNEY+ IN OCTOBER 
Start the countdown. The Mandalorian will return to Disney+ for an all new second season in October.

… Two months after The Mandalorian’s October return, Disney+ will debut WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany as Vision.

… Disney+ will debut The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in August. That series stars Anthony Mackie as Falcon and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes.

JOHN TRAVOLTA TO STAR OPPOSITE KEVIN HART IN QUIBI SERIES 
John Travolta will star opposite Kevin Hart in in the Quibi comedic action series Die Hart. In Die Hart, Hart plays a fictionalized version of himself who’s tired of being the comedic sidekick. He gets his wish when a famous director offers him his dream — to be a leading man action star — but there’s a catch: Kevin must first train at the world’s greatest action star school, run by a lunatic (Travolta). Pushed to his limits by this action school coach and a tough-minded rival student, Kevin must survive a series of hilarious, over-the-top action sequences and face his fears if he wants to achieve his dream and land the role of a lifetime.

… Quibi is a short-form mobile video service set to launch on April 6.

MARS ATTACKS! REMAKE REPORTEDLY IN THE WORKS 
Tim Burton has typically not been one for sequels, but he may be about to change his tune with Beetlejuice 2, which is believed to be back in development. He also might be involved in a remake of A Nightmare Before Christmas for Disney. And the good news doesn’t end there, as a Mars Attacks! remake is also being considered with the director returning for that one, too.

… Sources say Warner Bros. has interest in remaking the 1996 sci-fi comedy movie and they’d like Burton to get behind the camera. Nothing’s official yet.

CHRISTIAN BALE’S REPORTEDLY PLAYING AN INTERGALACTIC VILLAIN IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER 
At the beginning of the year, we learned the surprising news that former Batman star Christian Bale was in talks to appear alongside Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson in Thor: Love and Thunder. Now a source says that Bale is portraying an “intergalactic villain” in Love and Thunder who can be described as “otherworldly.”

MADONNA MAKES OFFER TO PRINCE HARRY, DUCHESS MEGHAN HER NEW YORK APARTMENT 
Apartment-hunting in New York City can be a struggle. But lucky for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, Madonna’s got them covered if they ever relocate to the Big Apple. Madonna, who is still on her Madame X Tour, took to Instagram Tuesday to let the Duke and Duchess of Sussex know she’s got a perfect spot for them in America if they ever move stateside. Madonna said: “Do Megan and Prince Harry want to sublet my apartment on Central Park West? Don’t run off to Canada. It’s so boring there.”

… According to the singer, her two-bedroom apartment has “the best view of Manhattan, an incredible balcony” and can rival Buckingham Palace.
