For Men: Is testosterone the overlooked power player?
We traditionally think of testosterone as primarily a male hormone but as I mentioned last month, it is very important for women as well. Both men and women can benefit greatly from optimizing their testosterone levels, but June is Men’s Health month and so I want to focus more on how low testosterone can impact a man’s health. I like to describe testosterone as the “drive hormone” because when testosterone thrives you get your “spark plug” back again. When testosterone levels are optimized, men often feel that their drive and motivation is back.As Dr Florence Comite writes, “libido hums, confidence rises, and work outs feel rewarding again.” It is so much easier to build muscle from your workouts if your testosterone levels are in a good range. In essence, your drive at work, in the gym, and in life is fueled and you may feel more vibrant.
Dr Comite goes on to say that when testosterone dips, you may enter into “the quiet fade.” You may lose your “get up and go,” energy fades, you notice dwindling muscle mass and belly fat starts to creep up. Let’s put it this way: Testosterone influences much more than muscles. It powers strength, passion, focus and resilience. If you have not had your total and free testosterone levels tested in the past year or so and would like to be tested, request this with your next set of lab work. Generally speaking, testosterone levels are best tested in the morning, which is when most people get their labs tested anyway. I often check testosterone levels a few times to determine if a low level is truly low or an aberration as a night of poor sleep can result in lower testosterone levels. Another good reason to focus on getting good sleep in both quality and quantity!
FUNCTIONAL NUTRITIONIST AVAILABILITY

Kathryn & I have known each other and been collaborating together for over 10 years. We first met at a local nutrition conference. She is gifted in meeting patients exactly where they are in their health journey and crafting new and innovative ways to help you meet your goals. She even owns her own organic herbal tea company!
